The double under pass is a control-based guard pass where both of the passer's arms go underneath the opponent's legs. It provides maximum control and pressure once established and is highly effective against aggressive guard players.

Setup

The double under typically starts from a kneeling or low position against closed guard. As the opponent extends their legs to create distance, this creates the opportunity to drive both arms through underneath their legs.

Establishing Both Arms Under

  1. Position yourself low against the guard
  2. As the opponent extends their legs, drive both arms underneath
  3. Cup both legs with your hands while keeping arms locked
  4. Your forearms are underneath, your hands control the legs from below
  5. Compress and drive forward

Control Mechanics

Once both arms are underneath, you have tremendous control. The opponent cannot extend their hips, cannot frame on your arms, and cannot create the typical guard passing defenses. Keep your head tight and your weight forward to prevent backward rolling.

Finishing the Double Under

Side Control

After securing both arms underneath, drive your hips forward and step into side control. The opponent is compressed and cannot establish effective bottom position.

Mount Transition

If positioned correctly, the double under can transition directly to mount by driving your hips forward and extending over the opponent's body.

⚑ Pro Tip: The double under is vulnerable to leg lock attacks if the opponent catches your arm. Keep your arms tight and avoid exposing them to the opponent's hip control.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the opponent turns their hip?

If they turn their hip into you, immediately drive your weight forward to re-flatten them. The double under relies on compression, so you must maintain forward pressure throughout.

Common BJJ Problems & FAQ

Q: Why do I feel like I'm losing my balance and falling forward when I try the Double Under Pass: Both Arms Control System?

You're likely overextending your hips forward and not driving your chest into your opponent's hips. To maintain balance, keep your hips low and drive your sternum directly into their pelvis, using your legs and glutes for power rather than just leaning.

Q: How can I prevent my opponent from shrimping away when I've secured the Double Under Pass: Both Arms Control System?

As you secure the underhooks, immediately drop your hips to the mat and drive your chest down, pinning their hips. Simultaneously, use your shoulder to block their hip, preventing them from creating space to shrimp out.

Q: What's the most important thing to remember about controlling my opponent's arms in the Double Under Pass: Both Arms Control System to stop them from posturing up?

Focus on keeping your elbows tight to your body and your forearms pressed against their biceps, driving them downwards. This connection prevents them from extending their arms and creating the space needed to posture up and defend.
