The single leg takedown is one of the most fundamental attacks in wrestling and BJJ. Learning proper defense against it is critical for all levels. A strong single leg defense combines technical positioning, timing, and proper weight distribution.
Identify when your opponent shoots for a single leg. Watch for their head drop and forward movement.
Push your hips back and extend your legs behind you. This removes your legs from their grasp and creates distance.
Post your hands on their back or shoulder. Control their head to prevent them from advancing.
Turn perpendicular to their body. This prevents them from getting chest-to-chest.
Once you've sprawled, the whizzer (overhook) is your best tool. Hook their arm and rotate your hips into them to prevent the takedown.
Once you master the basic sprawl, explore advanced defenses like the front headlock counter, underhook repositioning, and the knee slice escape if they do complete the takedown.
Single leg defense is one of the most critical survival skills in BJJ. Master it early and you'll avoid countless takedowns throughout your grappling career.
