BJJ gi care: washing, drying, shrinkage prevention, and how to maintain your martial arts gi.
Wash your gi inside-out in cold water with mild detergent. Hot water causes excess shrinkage and fading. Use gentle cycle or hand wash for delicate fabrics. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners β they weaken fibers. Wash separately from other clothes to prevent color bleeding. If your academy requires washing after every session, buy 2-3 gis so they have time to dry.
For blood stains, rinse immediately in cold water (hot water sets the stain). For grass or mat stains, use white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide before washing. For sweat stains, soak in cold water with oxygen-based cleaner. Treat stains before washing β detergent won't remove set-in stains. Some stains fade over time with repeated washing.
Most gis shrink 2-4% after first wash. Cold water reduces shrinkage compared to hot water. Air dry whenever possible β dryer heat causes additional shrinkage. If you must use a dryer, use low heat. Hang-dry gis lay flat or hang from shoulders to prevent stretching. A quality gi properly cared for will fit for years.
Air drying is best β hang your gi in shade or indoors. Direct sunlight can fade colors. Avoid hanging by the collar β use hangers that support the jacket or pants. Ensure your gi is completely dry before storing β moisture promotes mildew and odor. A gi takes 24-48 hours to dry fully depending on humidity.
Store gis in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use breathable storage bags, not plastic bags β plastic traps moisture. Consider cedar blocks or mothballs if storing for extended periods. Keep gis away from pets and high-traffic areas where they can get snagged. Fold neatly or hang to prevent wrinkles and creases.
Wash your gi soon after training β sweat and bacteria cause odor. If your gi smells even after washing, soak in white vinegar and water (1:3 ratio) for 30 minutes before washing. Air dry in sunlight if possible β sunlight naturally kills odor-causing bacteria. Never use fabric softener, which traps odors. Baking soda can be sprinkled on gis before washing to help with odor.
Small tears should be repaired immediately to prevent them from spreading. Use needle and thread or a sewing machine for small seams. For large tears, use a fabric patch or take it to a tailor. Loose buttons can be reinforced with extra thread. Weak collar stitching is common β reinforce with extra stitches or take to a tailor.
Rotate multiple gis to extend the life of each one β washing and drying is hard on fabric. Have at least 2-3 gis so one is always drying while you train. Avoid excessive washing if your academy allows it. Quality gis with proper care last 5-10 years. Treat your gi with respect β it's an investment in your BJJ journey.
