The duck under is an elegant wrestling takedown that uses leverage and level change to get behind the opponent without a leg shot. It is particularly effective in BJJ because it leads directly to back control — one of the highest-value positions.
The duck under works by creating an underhook on one side, then ducking your head under their arm while pivoting to emerge behind them. Speed and commitment are essential.
The most common duck under entry uses a collar tie (back of neck grip) to control their head while creating the underhook opportunity.
In an underhook battle, create a brief moment of elevation in their arm (by yanking upward), then immediately duck under before they can return to the battle position.
Once behind, transition immediately to seat belt grip: one arm over their shoulder, one arm under their other arm, hands clasping on their chest. Hook with your legs for back control.
Counter the duck under with a whizzer (overhook their underhooking arm), sprawl back, and hip into them. Alternatively, a front headlock or guillotine choke catches them as they duck.
