The Core Difference
The gi (uniform) fundamentally changes BJJ. Gripping the collar and sleeves creates leverage opportunities not available in no-gi, slows the pace, and rewards technical precision. No-gi relies on body control β underhooks, head position, wrist control β and tends to be faster and more scramble-based.
Grip Differences
In the gi: collar grips, sleeve grips, cross collar, baseball bat grip, and lapel control dominate. In no-gi: wrist control, gable grip, seat belt, and leg lace are primary. The absence of cloth grips in no-gi forces development of body clinch skills.
Guard Game Differences
Spider guard, lapel guard, collar sleeve, and worm guard are gi-specific. No-gi favors butterfly, leg entanglements, body triangle, and D'arce/anaconda setups. Half guard and closed guard exist in both but feel differently without cloth control.
Pace and Scramble
No-gi is generally faster and more scramble-heavy due to sweatier, more slippery conditions. Gi play tends to be slower with more positional chess. Neither is superior β they develop different athletic qualities.
Which Should You Train?
Both, if possible. Gi builds grip strength, technical precision, and positional understanding. No-gi builds wrestling, body control, and leg lock proficiency. Cross-training in both creates a more complete grappler regardless of competition preference.
Competition Considerations
IBJJF competitions primarily use the gi. EBI, ADCC, and many high-profile events are no-gi. Decide your primary competitive focus, but don't neglect the other β most top competitors train both regularly.
